For this blog post I have decided to discuss another blog that talks about white supremacists and the new president Obama. I decided on this blog because I thought the two seemed rather odd together especially when the title implies that they are happy about our new president
The blog, titled: President Obama? Many White Supremacists are Celebtrating by Mark Potok ( http://www.splcenter.org/blog/2008/06/11/president-obama-many-white-supremacists-are-celebrating/ ) had me interested and almost excited for a moment. After reading the title I was in shock. Could people really be coming around? Could the leaders of all the neo nazis really be coming to their senses? Could they really be excited about an African American president and realize that his skin color is not what matters? Well after reading on I was sadly and extremely mistaken. This blog discusses how many white supremacists are thrilled about the idea of an African American president because he would surely anger people and screw up our nation so much that people would realize that Anglo Saxons are "losing control" and need to start realizing that other races are not fit to be treated equally, let alone lead a nation.
The blog discusses other blogs with similar opinions and some statements go as far as saying “He (Obama) will make things so bad for white people that hopefully they will finally realize how stupid they were for admiring these jigaboos all these years”. The other ideas are all similar. Mark seems to assume that because Barack Obama is African American he will screw up being president so much that it will cause people to come to their "senses" about African Americans in general.
These ideas are so ludacris and have no basis for support. I mean lets be honest, our economy and country quite frankly aren't in the best shape to begin with. It is not like he is getting a walk in the park job. We are already in economic turmoil as well as still being in a war. Can it really get much worse? What can he do to make things substansially less off? I mean people hated George Bush but they didn't all start hating white people.
Yet another "interesting" idea brought up is summarized in this statement: "It will be a beautiful day when the masses look at the paper and truly realize they have lost their own country". First of all when was it "our country"? If I recall the Native Americans were here first. I mean isn't that what they taught us in elementary school? But of course seeing an African American as our own president will disturb people so much that they will take on Klan views and realize that they need to do something to "take control". That is what this blog is stating. Yes I agree it sounds absurd but that is what white supremacists truly believe.
The article brought to my attention many different views and ideas that I never considered. I am not completely naive, I know that having an African American president will cause controversy but I had no idea that it could spark new views of white supremacists and cause people to cross over to what I can only explain as the dark side.
